Project Overview – Fix 50

Fix50 Highway Enhancement Project

U.S. Highway 50 Design-Build Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project

Project Overview

The U.S. Highway 50 Design-Build Multimodal Corridor Enhancement Project (also known as the Fix50 Highway Enhancement Project) is in construction.

Crews started debris and tree removal in November 2020 to prepare for a new sound wall on the south side of US-50 from Stockton Boulevard to 65th Street in Sacramento. Crews began the foundation work for the sound wall the week of March 15, 2021 and as of September 1, 2022, construction of the sound wall has been completed.

On behalf of Caltrans, thank you for your patience as crews are working day and night to complete the work as soon as possible.

The estimated $483.5 million project, including $390.2 million in SB 1 funding and $28.4 million from Local Measure Tax funding, not only includes the new sound wall but new high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes (carpool lanes) in each direction on US-50 from the Interstate 5 Interchange to Watt Avenue to help reduce emissions to tackle climate change.  Crews will also widen ramps and connector ramps, widen bridges, and increase vertical clearance at overcrossings, replace freeway pavement with continuously reinforced concreate pavement, and make other enhancements to US-50 in Sacramento.

This project also includes the Sacramento Regional Transit District’s (SacRT) light rail expansion project from Sunrise Boulevard to Downtown Folsom.  With the improvements, the Gold Line light rail will increase the frequency of service from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes from Sunrise Boulevard to Downtown Folsom.

In summary, this multimodal SB 1 project will improve mobility along US-50, repair 54 lane miles of pavement, and increase vertical clearance at seven overcrossings, which will improve the movement of goods allowing more large trucks to use the highway.

This is the largest project in the Sacramento region, and below are a few project highlights:

  • Adding Carpool [High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV)] lanes in each direction on U.S. Highway 50 from east of Watt Avenue to Interstate 5
  • Replace freeway pavement with continuously reinforced concrete pavement
  • Construct retaining walls and widen U.S. Highway 50 between 39th Street Undercrossing and 65th Street Undercrossing
  • New Sound Walls along south side of U.S. Highway 50 from Stockton Boulevard to 65th Street Undercrossing
  • Widen 12 Bridges
  • Improve connector ramps
  • Widen ramps at three locations:
  • 59th Street slip on-ramp to westbound U.S. Highway 50 by adding mixed flow lane
  • Southbound 65th Street slip on-ramp to westbound U.S. Highway 50 by adding HOV lane
  • Northbound 65th Street loop on-ramp to westbound U.S. Highway 50 by adding HOV lane
  • Improve freight movement by increasing vertical clearance at seven overcrossings to meet current standards
  • Replace Overhead Signs
  • Replace Sign Panels
  • Replace lighting
  • Replace bridge rail on bridges and retaining walls
  • Improve bridge decks
  • Replace structure approach slabs
  • Utility upgrades

  • Enhance safety to include Midwest guardrail system, crash cushions and barriers
  • Improve Traffic Management Systems by enhancing Intelligent Transportation System elements that helps communicate to travelers about transportation information.

The contractor for this design-build project is Flatiron Construction, and the project is scheduled to be completed Summer 2025.

While the project is in construction, residents expect loud construction noises at various times during the day and night.
